Change in title tags & snippets of your website in SERPs

While doing research, I have noticed that Google is NOT showing the title tag in the Search Engine Result Page (SERPs) for our website. I got shocked and started wondering why this is happening. Why Google is just ignoring our page title tag and displaying their own. I thought Google may be just testing or about to launch some new algorithm. But if it is happening, it could be a scary thought.

Here we go, below is a result when I did a search for “pepper square” query.

Now see for yourself: Try a search for “digital agency bangalore”.

Look at the sixth result: www.peppersquare.com

Notice the title in the SERPs, this is the actual title of the page: “digital agency bangalore, interface design & web development.”

Google actually altering the title tags we created. Matt Cutts discusses this in a video of Google changing the Title tags and Snippets: -

I am not finished yet; I started digging bit deeper and found another SERP snippet change. Found another example: now search for “Interactive Agency” and see wikipedia’s snippet description (highlighted below) with a Jump to interactive agencies link.

What will happen if Google will do this kind of updates and ignore the number one factor of on-page optimization the title tags?

Hands-on SEO Audit

Website audits are a great way to figure out what might be keeping your site from ranking well in search engines for a given keyword.

This post is not comprehensive, but definitely it will help you quickly identify major problems and also tell you what the current state of the website’s health is.

Here are some three basic steps to conduct website SEO audit analysis:

1. Check Google indexed/cached pages:

To do this open http://www.Google.com/ and enters site specific search “site:example.com” and clicks the search button.

By using above specific site search command you can see how many pages have been indexed in Google. My suggestion would be to check the cached page’s text only version and see how Googlebot is crawling and affecting the site. See how Googlebot crawls and indexes your site which will assist to identify issues like website homepage isn’t showing up as the first result.

2. Website Homepage Analysis:

This approach will help you critique your site and improve the performance of the site. Your home page is one of your most valuable assets. Below homepage analysis checklist will cover mostly every area that can impact your site’s online success.

• Does the homepage have enough content, at least one paragraph?

• Does the page have good magnetic headlines which grab attention and draw users in?

• Does the page have proper targeted keywords

Keywords that you think can drive traffic to your business?

• Does the page have heading tags (H1, H2 etc) used?

• Does the page have images, if yes does they have alt text and image title?

• Does the page have title tags used?

• The best practice format for title tags is one of the following

Primary Keyword - Secondary Keywords Brand
Brand Name Primary Keyword and Secondary Keywords

• Does the page have meta description used?

• Run a quick check on the URL change or URL is canonical (e.g. from your-domain.com/ to www. your-domain.com or from www. your-domain.com to www. your-domain.com/lame-keyword-in-URL-trick.html etc.)

• Check domain, sub-domain and microsite for duplicate content.

To conduct that, search the engines for title tag (in quotes) or the first sentence of the content page (also in quotes). If there is more than one result from the given domain, sub-domain and microsite, then there is a duplicate content problem.

• Has the entire site, or important content being blocked via the robots.txt file?

• Check for XML Sitemap.

Sitemap: www. your-domain.com/sitemap.xml
You can examine the content of a sitemap.xml file by http://validator.w3.org/

• Check for Broken links.

Are 301’s being used for all redirects?
Custom 404 error page.
Call to action button.

3. Website Statistical Analysis

This is an important phase, analyzing the data from your website is very important. According to a book “Measuring the Success of your Website” by Hurol Inan. There are four phases of customer engagement. These phases are 1. Reach, 2. Acquire, 3. Convert, and 4. Retain.

I do statistical analysis to determine the amount of visits to each web page. This helps me to understand where the traffic comes in and what keywords or phrases used to find web pages. There are several steps, some of the ways that I use to analysis includes:

How many visitors are coming to the website?
What are the top paths that users use to navigate site?
What are the traffic sources and where do visitors come from?
If search engines, what keywords and phrases they are using to find website?
How long do visitors stay on website?
What is the bounce rate?
What referral websites are sending the high visitors traffic?

The next step what I perform is to assess what changes are required in terms of visitors behaviour, time spent on various pages, most requested content and most requested keyphrases to improve conversions. This analysis helps me to build better digital marketing strategies to drive more traffic to increase conversion ratio.

There are lots of powerful, flexible and easy-to-use tools to analyze your traffic data in an entirely new way. Every aspect of a website and website marketing campaign can be measured and analyzed to ensure that maximum efficiency can be attained.

Google added latest addition "Instant Previews" on its search engine. Now Google lets you preview search results before you click them. The new feature can load preview results in less than one-tenth of a second, while many of today's websites usually take four or five seconds to load.

Google accomplishes this by taking a screenshot of every webpage in its index and giving users access to it via a magnifying glass icon that sits to the right of every search result.

To use the feature, people can click on the "magnifying glass" next to the title of any search result and a visual overview of the page will appear on the right. Is there anyone who could tell me what the meaning of social networking website is? Well today am talking about Facebook, man just now i came to know that you can't reach 5,000(5k) Facebook friends in your profile. Is this called Social Networking??

I think we need to think again about virtual social networking sites. I was figuring out with my friends and one of my colleagues told me that Facebook doesn’t think you can handle or have more than 5k “real” friends on Facebook. So might be coz of that they don’t allow you to have such a huge list of friends.

You know what my concern is, I think people may or may not have more than 5k friends but they have a option to join social networking sites to interact and to add unknown friends whom they don’t know. I mean, these websites are meant to be for that. I know it is their rule; we have to agree with them and the site is not meant to be used for business or spam.

Someone told me to start a fan page. Facebook allows you to have an indefinite number of fans at this time so start a fan page for all your friends to follow you. But guys, am not a big shot or celebrity.

Seems like FB is more about friends and family. Connecting with everyone around you in a very user friendly way through wall posts, pics, vids, chats and even apps are bu!!s@#t. There have been rumors for the last couple of years that they would change it but they haven't yet. Social networking is conquering the Web, and the leader in this growing market is Facebook. I just hope that Facebook eventually releases some official information and I hope they lift this 5k issue.

Gmail spam filter problem

I regularly receive spam from the shadan nabegha. I knew that, by clicking that report spam will not only help keep my inbox clean, but it will also potentially keep my inbox cleaner in the future. So I always mark the mail then click on "Report Spam". Well this moves the offending mail to Spam, but does not stop me getting the mails in the first place.

I don’t know what’s wrong with Gmail. Seems like spammers are using trusted Web sites, Web mail and social networking environments to host spam content or my Gmail buttons "Report spam" doesn't work.

I have never visited any sites connected with this promotion, so don't understand how or why I'm getting the mails in the first place. How can you help in the fight? Is there a way of blocking these emails?

Facebook Down ?

It appears social networking site Facebook is currently out of action. Reports are coming in rapidly that the site is either completely not loading and/or the service is loading very slowly. I am unable to access Facebook currently from multiple Internet connections.

Not even two weeks after its worst outage in over four years, Facebook is down once again.

Even from last couple of days I’ve noticed the facebook is having photo managing problem like when i click upload or view photo nothing happens. I can't upload photos to facebook pages or profile anymore, I keep reading discussion thread after discussion thread, in the facebook help section of so many people with this problem and FB does nothing to solve it. Now i have seen that people started uploading one photo at a time through their wall instead of uploading batches.

Few days back, me and one of my friend were discussing on, how to hook clients from local market to increase business. As we all know for professional like search engine optimiser (SEO), the field is wide open as far as clients are concerned. But have you ever wondered how to get local domestic client?

Well everyone needs to get some quick client’s. Here lemme tell you, how can you get started in this industry and also how can you build a customer/client.

Some client will have a website, others will not at all. There are lots of approaches to contacting these businesses. I suggest you to find 20 businesses that you would like to approach. You have to go and find them by yourself.

Now you need to set aside an entire day, say about 30-45 min for each business. Look for their website, their profile and check for a few simple basic SEO things, such as optimized title and header tags, w3c validation, content needs, backlinks, etc. and write up a few points for each business.

Next step is to list out their major keywords, for that you can use keyword site scan feature for each business. Listen first & see what their needs are and what they are doing about them, if anything. Give them your SEO suggestions for their site and the ranking report, and do it in a no obligation way. Briefly tell them what your services could do to help them out, and ask if they are interested in discussing it further.
If the business does not have a website, suggest how a website could help them. Even if you don’t design websites, you can work with a business or individual that does and offer it as a service along with your SEO services.

Of course there is much more work involved than this, but these steps you can start on today to get yourself ahead in the growing field of SEO.

Ask yourself, why anyone would choose you over anyone else. If you can come up with an attention grabbing answer then success is assured.

In the end, work hard for all of your clients, going much further than giving them 100% in the beginning until you can prove to them that you know what you’re doing and can bring results. Here am providing you little information about improving your website's visibility in the Google search results. Don’t forget that if you’re optimizing a page with targeted keywords than you must follow Google guidelines and avoid Keyword stuffing.

Several search engines, considers keyword density as part of their search algorithm. Keyword density is important because search engines use this information to categorize a site's theme, and to determine which terms the site is relevant to.

In my opinion don’t use negative SEO practice and never try by filling pages with keywords, it may harm your site's ranking.

Always check your webpage’s Keyword Density with this formula (# of Keyword Uses ÷ Total # of Terms on the Page)

1. Keyword Use Anywhere in the Title Tag: - Title tag is definitely the most important when used correctly. 4. Keyword Use Anywhere in the H1 Headline Tag: - I believe that by adding these heading tags, and if you can logically use keywords in them, you're providing additional emphasis on your keywords. Make sure a H1 tag appears close to the top of the page and keyword Use as the First Word(s) in the H1 Tag.

So never show your bad hobbies or activities on your public profile.

Don’t spam: And last but not least, the biggest no-no of them all. It is harmful and might even get you banned or penalized.

Dont say sorry

Short time ago I was thinking about why a person says sorry..? In relationships sooner or later we all say & do dumb things not out of meanness, but because of frustration, stress or any number of other emotions. It depends again on what you were sorry for, and your real intent behind what you said or did.

Socially it can become a real pain in the ass. I play volleyball and I play with someone I don't want to say sorry when mistakenly I smash the ball on net. I say I'm sorry one time to my partners at the beginning of the match and then I never say it again.

Whatever, it seems that just saying sorry isn't always enough. I'm not suggesting this strategy in your relationships, but you might want to develop some similar tactics or rules regarding this issue so you can avoid any negative outcomes.

Microsoft Bing is here, with a pretty background. I went ahead this morning and verified my blog, but it was not listed properly on Bing, so here is the step for you to do the same, what i did to get listed on Bing:

A. Now go to the Bing Webmaster Center at: http://www.bing.com/webmaster/. You will have to create a Windows Live account to log in or you can use Your existing Gmail/yahoo e-mail address, which will be your Windows Live ID.

B. After logging in, click the “Add a Site” button with Sitemap Url.

C. After submitting the form you have to add some verification code to your site (either XML or a META tag). This is not as hard as it sounds just need to copy paste on your website header section.

D. Sit back and wait for Bing to “CRAWL" your website.

and type “iPhone” into the “Value” field. Click “Add ‘or’ statement” to get a second target area, and do the same for iPod or for Android. Then, you can name your segment “High-end mobile or Anything” and see that traffic in Analytics.

I know sometimes we feel lazy and just let it as it is... I agree that a search engine does not consider Meta keywords tag in ranking calculations and it’s never seen by visitors, but don’t forgot the Meta description tag is visible beneath listings in SERPs.

Your title tags plays a vital role when it comes to Search Engine Results Page (SERPs) so insert some targeted keyword in title tags. It is true that Google does rank dynamic urls as long as you don’t have too many parameters and your parameters don’t look like session variables.

Keyword specific domains and sub domains rank high in search engine algorithm. Search engines look for keywords because of this the keyword in the url suggests that the site contents are related to the keyword. Even visitors like to click the link that contains relevant keywords when they look search results. If suppose you have chosen some other keyword, like I used my name in my blog url so we have other option like BLOG POST URL. Just keep in mind and ensure that keywords should appear in each and every post.

I find some tricks to get good organic search result.

Google's New META tag

It’s great news for all Search Engine Optimizer. Previously I discussed the Webpage removal tool, but that was for dead link/broken link. This is some how same but different with each other.
Got confused..? Will clear..!!!

Google’s a new META tag which allows us to put in the picture, when a page supposed to be removed from the main Google web search results: the aptly named unavailable_after tag.

For example, to specify that an HTML page should be removed from the search results after 3pm Eastern Standard Time on 25th August 2007; simply add the following tag to the first section of the page:

<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="unavailable_after: 25-Aug-2007 15:00:00 EST">

This META tag is treated as a taking away request: it will take about a day after the removal date passes for the page to disappear from the search results. Google currently only support unavailable_after for Google web search results.

Starting of the post I told you that this update is different from the webpage removal tool because with the help of these tag we can remove the page from the Google web search but cant delete from there system. So for deleting the page we have to go thru Webmaster tool…

I have few doubt about on this update like instead of GoogleBot can we include other search engines name. I hope that option will also presented soon from all Search Engine’s.

Yesterday I was finding the way to put our own ALT tag title but couldn’t found any solution, so if anybody knows how to insert our own tags in ALT tags (I mean for blogger user) then please comment me.

I have seen people use to keep Blog Roll Links, In my opinion don’t keep blog roll links although if you want to keep then maintain a small list of blog roll.
Work on keyword, check the keyword density this will help you a lot.

Now days I am not getting that much time, but here we go again with some new tips of social media promotion. Like I discussed previous about Widgets, its creation and promotion, I found that this tool drives a lots of traffic. So thought to utilize my Widgetbox, to drive traffic.

Google Acquired Feedburner

Yeah its true according to TechCrunch, that Google acquired Feedburner, which is a web feed management company. The whole deal was in cash and mostly upfront, although the founders will be locked in for a couple of years.

What cool is taken YouTube, and now Feedburner? Hope they’ll be buying ICANN?

Interesting news for publishers currently running Feedburner’s advertising program because it’s likely that Google might integrate its Adsense contextual ad network with Feedburner.

Feedburner has a large inventory of publishers currently using their services and it would make sense for Google to tap these current users instead of relaunching or promoting Adsense for Feeds, Google’s RSS advertising program which has been in a perpetual closed beta since 2005.

Current Adsense publishers will also have the option of experimenting with feed based monetization. The integration with Adsense might also result in a lower barrier of entry (subscription level) for publishers.

Not to mention that Google will finally be stepping head-on into the RSS advertising industry by allowing it’s Adwords advertisers to purchase feed-based ad campaigns through Feedburner’s current setup.

It’ll be very interesting to see what changes are made in the near future.

Today when I was searching Link Popularity in MSN, I was shocked you know why because MSN has discontinued reporting results for the operator 'link:'. As such, we can’t search Link Popularity in MSN. More information regarding their decision is available on the MSN blog.

I love Google (and I really do like every web product they produce), this is just inexcusable.

Google has apparently lost the personalized homepage preferences of hundreds of users, and over 150 people have posted as having the problem on Google Groups since 6:45 am . Users are coming into their accounts and seeing them rolled back several months, losing the last few months of customizations, and any attempt to edit their pages and fix it gets rolled backwards.

So Please Do not change your homepage theme until the problem has been solved.

That’s what Google has to worry about with stuff like this. No matter how good your software is, if it crashes, loses data, is unavailable, or just has weird bugs, people will desert you and all your hard work will be for nothing.

Sarah, who is a Veejay and a model, won the title beating 24 other contestants in the finals of the event.

He said the pageant this year had decided to declared the 'Miss India World' as the official winner.

Be Linkable

Phase One: Once you know your goals and where you want to submit, your next objective is to be linkable. This is by far the most difficult and the most important step in any SMO campaign. To be linkable, you must create content that is worthy of being linked to and make that content accessible to users.

One of the quickest ways to make your content more accessible is to allow tags and to add a "Digg This", "Add to del.icio.us" or Technorati chicklet to your Web site and RSS feed. By making tagging and bookmarking easy for users, it encourages readers to submit the content for you. This not only helps to increase readership, but it also builds your site-wide community.
Phase Two: The second part of the linkability process is the hardest part of SMO. You must create something unique, compelling and worthy enough of being submitted and linked to. One reason why this is so difficult is because you can do anything. There are no boundaries.
Don't think that just because you're a company that sells paper cups you don't have the opportunity to create irresistible linkbait. You do. Any subject is linkbait-able, regardless of how mundane it seems on the surface. Maybe you feel that creating an article about paper cups won't be exciting enough to bring in new visitors, but how about creating a tool that counts how many water-filled Brand X paper cups it would take to fill the Mississippi river. Or creating a Flash game where users can practice their entrepreneurial skills selling fruit punch in your paper cups. Or encourage users to create and submit their own videos explaining what they love about the paper cup. The more ridiculous the idea, the more it will excite visitors, and the greater success you'll have with it.

Link magnets don't have to be flashy. If creating a showy Flash video doesn't fit within the theme of your site, try authoring a valuable educational resource for your industry. Compile a list of the best sites/bloggers in your field to make it easy for those in your network to find information. Write the most well-researched, in-depth article on How To Do [X]. Create a tool that solves a common problem for members in your field. The possibilities are endless. It just takes a little thought and creativity.

Whatever you do, resist the temptation to spam the social media sites. The only way your SMO campaign will be successful is if it's genuine. Don't submit content that doesn't fit with the community you're entering. Sites like Digg or Wikipedia are very good at seeing through blatant self-promotion. Make sure you're offering a clear benefit to the community, otherwise prepare to be flamed and tossed out. The backlash from "abusing" a community like Digg could turn into a PR nightmare for your company, completely voiding any goodwill you had hoped to create.
If you're going to submit content to sites like Digg, Reddit or Newsvine, write a personalized email to a dozen or so relevant bloggers before you submit in order to get some early links. A little work upfront could help get the ball rolling and have a big impact on your overall success.
It's also recommend that site owners use a common username among all the different social media sites. This helps establish yourself in the various communities and makes it appear like you're a trusted member and not just out for quick links, even if you are.

Accept Failure and Try Again

The truth is, even after you've followed the rules faithfully, your first dozen (or two) attempts probably won't work. It takes time to create the momentum you need to establish yourself in the various communities. However, once one of your items does hit, you'll understand what all the fuss was about and why social media optimization is worth all the hard work.
You also can't let up once you get that first taste of success. If you want to maintain the traffic you are receiving, you have to continue to participate. Your success in social media will wholeheartedly depend on user engagement.

For years now, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for websites has been honed into a fine art with entire companies devoting considerable effort to defining best practices and touting the value of SEO for raising a site's performance on organic search listings. While I believe in the power of SEO, there is a new offering we have started providing to clients which we call Social Media Optimization (SMO). The concept behind SMO is simple: implement changes to optimize a site so that it is more easily linked to, more highly visible in social media searches on custom search engines (such as Technorati), and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs, podcasts and vlogs. Here are 5 rules we use to help guide our thinking with conducting an SMO for a client's website:

1. Increase your linkability - This is the first and most important priority for websites. Many sites are "static" - meaning they are rarely updated and used simply for a storefront. To optimize a site for social media, we need to increase the linkability of the content. Adding a blog is a great step, however there are many other ways such as creating white papers and thought pieces, or even simply aggregating content that exists elsewhere into a useful format.

2. Make tagging and bookmarking easy - Adding content features like quick buttons to "add to del.icio.us" are one way to make the process of tagging pages easier, but we go beyond this, making sure pages include a list of relevant tags, suggested notes for a link (which come up automatically when you go to tag a site), and making sure to tag our pages first on popular social bookmarking sites (including more than just the homepage).

3. Reward inbound links - Often used as a barometer for success of a blog (as well as a website), inbound links are paramount to rising in search results and overall rankings. To encourage more of them, we need to make it easy and provide clear rewards. From using Permalinks to recreating Similarly, listing recent linking blogs on your site provides the reward of visibility for those who link to you.

4. Help your content travel - Unlike much of SEO, SMO is not just about making changes to a site. When you have content that can be portable (such as PDFs, video files and audio files), submitting them to relevant sites will help your content travel further, and ultimately drive links back to your site.

5. Encourage the mashup - In a world of co-creation, it pays to be more open about letting others use your content (within reason). YouTube's idea of providing code to cut and paste so you can imbed videos from their site has fueled their growth. Syndicating your content through RSS also makes it easy for others to create mashups that can drive traffic or augment your content.

There are many other "rules" and techniques that we are starting to uncover as this idea gets more sophisticated. In the meantime we are always on the lookout for new ideas in Social Media Optimization to encourage even better thinking.
